We were at the Children’s media conference a few days ago, amongst many things we picked up and pondered on there was something we picked up during a session and have since included it in our own lexicon, the concept of ‘Reality points’ mentioned by Kaila Colbin the chief marketing officer of the brilliant kids virtual world Minimonos.
Essentially as I understood it these can be taken as physical manifestations or mentions of your brand or online property in the physical world on traditional channels. Maybe something like top up cards in a supermarket if say you had a subscription based service. In one sense they score points with your intended audience, and give credence to the very existence of your virtual world and its authenticity, because it takes effort to get into those places! We trust things that are tangible and by virtue of living on more channels you appear more real.
So this is something we’re pursuing with vigour with Lemontree and Librarygame, we’re particularly interested in scoring some low cost but neat reality points with the proposed following:
Stickers / Tiny Promo Cards in Students Goodie bags and scattered around campus
Inserts in certain books / shelves, so you discover these and get some additional points by entering their code of visiting a URL they have.
Visual presence in the library / wall graphics / vinyls / digital signage.
